The Role of Exercise in Weight Control
(by Lenita Anthony, MA)
Battling the Bulge? Exercise tends to receive less attention (or at least action) than does diet. However, many experts, feel that the nationwide obesity epidemic is primarily a result of under activity, not overeating. In fact, a recent study followed three groups of people using various means to achieve weight loss: a "diet only" group, a "diet and exercise" group, and an "exercise only" group. All lost weight, but after two years, the only group to have kept any weight off was the exercise only group! Regular exercise (like Jazzercise) has many far reaching effects.
If you are already enrolled in Jazzercise (or another exercise program) you are well on your way to managing your weight. Here's a few tips to help keep you motivated to stay on track:
1. Find an exercise that you enjoy
2. Exercise with a friend when possible
3. Put your exercise time in your daily schedule like any other appointment. (You'll be more likely to attend when you make an appointment.)
4. Cross-train. Jazzercise 3 times per week, walk 2 times per week, take a bike ride 2 times per week or take your sweetheart dancing once a week.
The idea is to be active on a regular basis. Exercise not only strengthens your muscles, helps control your weight but also gives you a mental boost (especially when you enjoy your exercise program). So make a plan, get out there today and start enjoying all the benefits of exercise.
